SANParks’ Mandela Day dedication of 67 minutes of service begins early

Given that Mandela Day falls on a Sunday, South African National Parks (SANParks) will be honouring Former President Nelson Mandela’s call to dedicate 67 minutes of time to the service of our communities on Friday, 16 July 2010.

Employees at SANParks Head Office (Groenkloof National Park) will offer their services at different community projects in Pretoria, in response to the Chief Executive of SANParks, Dr David Mabunda, who requested that SANParks be a fore-runner in demonstrating support for a worthy humanitarian effort such as this.

“We may be in the business of conserving the natural heritage of South Africa, but we have to all understand that people are also a part of that natural heritage. We are in the position to reach out to those who are less fortunate than ourselves and what better opportunity to get active in this effort, than in honour of the great Nelson Mandela,” said Dr Mabunda.

The SANParks employees will be involved in the following projects on Friday from 10:00:

While SANParks will commemorate the 67 minutes for Mandela Day early, Dr Mabunda says that he hopes this will be a form of encouragement to his employees to continue this effort on Sunday, 18 July 2010, and as often as possible from then onwards.

“Serving our communities makes us a part of the improvement of our nation, and I hope every person understands the importance of their role and contribution, no matter how small, to the success of this country,” said Dr Mabunda.
